South Carolina Industries of the Future

Industry is the largest and most diverse energy-consuming sector in South Carolina, often unable to accept the risks associated with the capital-intensive technology development required to decrease its energy use.

The South Carolina IOF program works closely with the U.S. Department of Energy and the South Carolina Energy Office to help mitigate that risk. By supporting public-private partnerships, we bring together the strengths of business and government to meet the challenges of improving energy efficiency.

The SCIOF program started in 2001. The mission of SCIOF is to be a catalyst for projects, partnerships, and programs that increase energy efficiency, reduce and utilize waste materials, and generally improve industrial productivity. SCIOF working groups form to respond to federal R&D solicitations or to take up other issues as dictated by the teams' overall goals. Over the past five years, SCIOF has been awarded 5 grants totaling approximately $4.5 million to assist industry with energy efficiency.

Manufacturing in South Carolina

South Carolina is home to a large and diverse manufacturing base with over 3500 industries located in the state. The industrial sector accounts for 39.9% of the energy consumed in the state for a total of 609 trillion Btu’s.

Manufacturing in South Carolina represents 19.3% of Gross State Product (GSP), and South Carolina ranks Number 8 in the country in terms of manufacturing contribution to GSP.

As of 2006, the SCIOF program has focused on the following industry sectors:

  • Metal Casting
  • Chemical/Polymers
  • Forest Products
  • Mining/Brick

The following table shows that a large portion of the state's manufacturing Gross State Product and manufacturing employment is due to the IOF industry sectors. The prominence of IOF industry sectors motivated South Carolina to implement a state-level IOF program.
